History

The Sacred Heart Hospital, Paynkulam was established on March 11, 1979. It is owned and run by the Reverend Sisters of the Jyothi Province of the Sacred Heart Congregation, founded by the Servant of God Rev. Fr. Mathew Kadalikkattill in 1911. Inspired by the Lord Almighty, Dr (Sr) Angel Mary MD founded this Hospital, with the unique mission of giving psychiatric treatment under custodial care to the unfortunate and mentally ill brethren who are unwanted in their families and ostracized by society. Her dream was to win these persons by providing them care and an atmosphere of love and acceptance which would lead to cure. From its humble beginning in 1979 with 60 beds, it has grown steadily in the past years to a hospital with 490 beds. This hospital is now one of the biggest psychiatric hospitals in the private sector in India, perhaps in the whole of Asia. This has been a pioneering institution instilling many others to begin similar ventures. It continues to provide empathetic custodial care by admitting patients without bystanders. The love of Jesus and their faith on the Divine Providence urges the Sacred Heart sisters to serve untiringly the unwanted, the needy, the suffering and the neglected
